school award

Safe Harbor Academy is honored to have been recognized with a National School Choice Leadership Award, recognizing the school’s commitment to educational opportunity and providing families with a distinctive alternative for teenage boys who may not be thriving in a traditional school environment.

The recognition is especially meaningful to Safe Harbor because school choice is about finding the educational environment that best fits the needs of an individual student. For some young men, a conventional classroom and school setting simply isn’t enough. They may need greater structure, more individual attention, positive mentoring, practical learning opportunities, and an environment that addresses character and personal responsibility alongside academics.

That is where Safe Harbor Academy offers something different.

A Different Kind of Educational Experience

Safe Harbor combines academics with a structured Christian residential program designed for teenage boys who are struggling with behavioral, academic, or emotional challenges.

Students continue their education while participating in a highly distinctive program built around seamanship, maritime training, vocational education, counseling, mentoring, physical activity, and hands-on responsibility. Life on and around the water provides opportunities for boys to learn skills that cannot always be taught from a textbook.

For many students, this change of environment can provide an opportunity to reset priorities and rediscover their capabilities.

Rather than defining a young man by his past mistakes or struggles, Safe Harbor focuses on helping him develop the skills, habits, confidence, and character needed to move forward.

Expanding Educational Choices for Families

Parents know that children do not all learn, mature, or respond to challenges in the same way. A school that works exceptionally well for one teenager may be the wrong environment for another.

Safe Harbor believes families should have meaningful educational choices, including alternatives for students whose needs extend beyond what a conventional school setting can readily provide.

The National School Choice Leadership Award recognizes Safe Harbor’s participation and leadership in supporting educational choice and helping families understand that different educational paths are available.

For Safe Harbor, however, school choice is more than a national conversation. It is something we see firsthand in the lives of the young men who come through our program.

More Than 40 Years of Helping Boys Find a Better Direction

Safe Harbor Academy’s mission began in 1982, when a juvenile judge asked founders Doug and Robbie Smith to take a struggling young man into their home aboard a boat. From that first student grew a Christian residential program that has now served young men and their families for more than four decades.

Throughout those years, the underlying philosophy has remained remarkably consistent: give a young man structure, responsibility, education, positive relationships, practical experiences, Christian guidance, and an opportunity to discover a better direction for his life.

Receiving the National School Choice Leadership Award is an encouraging recognition of that continuing mission and of Safe Harbor’s role in providing families with an educational option that is very different from the traditional classroom.

For parents searching for a structured Christian school and residential program for a struggling teenage boy, Safe Harbor Academy offers an environment where academics, character development, counseling, vocational learning, and maritime experiences come together with a common purpose—helping young men prepare for a more successful future.

If you have the year the award was received and the organization that presented it, I would add those two details. They would make this considerably stronger as a news article and give the award more credibility.
