Safe Harbor Academy is pleased to be a member of the Sunshine State Association of Christian Schools (SSACS), an organization serving Christian schools throughout Florida and supporting their commitment to quality education grounded in Christian principles.
For families considering Safe Harbor Academy, this membership reflects our commitment to providing more than a structured residential environment for struggling teenage boys. Education is an important part of each student’s experience at Safe Harbor, with academics integrated into a broader program designed to encourage responsibility, character development, practical skills, and spiritual growth.
Christian Education With a Purpose
At Safe Harbor Academy, education extends well beyond the classroom. Boys participate in a structured academic program while also benefiting from the unique opportunities provided by our maritime setting. Seamanship, vocational instruction, hands-on responsibilities, mentoring, counseling, and daily Christian teaching work together to help young men develop skills they can carry into adulthood.
Our Christian foundation is central to that mission. We believe lasting change involves more than improving grades or correcting behavior. Young men need positive relationships, accountability, purpose, and a strong moral foundation as they begin making better decisions about their lives and futures.
Membership in the Sunshine State Association of Christian Schools connects Safe Harbor with a broader community of Christian educators and schools that share a commitment to faith-based education.
Helping Boys Prepare for What Comes Next
Many boys arrive at Safe Harbor after struggling academically, behaviorally, socially, or at home. Some have experienced failing grades, truancy, defiance, negative peer influences, minor substance use, adoption-related difficulties, or recent trauma. These challenges can affect virtually every part of a teenager’s life, including his education.
Safe Harbor provides an environment where boys can step away from many of the distractions and negative influences that have contributed to their difficulties. Through consistent expectations, academics, counseling, mentorship, maritime training, vocational experiences, and Christian guidance, students have opportunities to rebuild productive habits and develop greater confidence and personal responsibility.
Our goal is not simply to help a boy get through his current difficulties. We want him to leave Safe Harbor better prepared for the next stage of his life—with stronger academic skills, practical abilities, improved decision-making, and a clearer sense of direction.
More Than 40 Years of Helping Young Men
Safe Harbor Academy’s work with struggling teenage boys dates back to 1982, when a juvenile judge asked founders Doug and Robbie Smith to take a young man into their home aboard a boat. What began with one boy grew into a distinctive Christian residential program centered around education, counseling, character development, and life on the water.
More than four decades later, that mission continues.
Our membership in the Sunshine State Association of Christian Schools is another reflection of Safe Harbor’s longstanding commitment to Christian education and to providing young men with an environment where they can learn, mature, and begin moving toward a more promising future.
