As of the United States 2010 Census the township had a total population of 92,843, making Lakewood the largest community in Ocean County. The 2010 population represented an increase of 32,491 (53.8%) from the 60,352 residents enumerated during the 2000 Census, with the township ranking as the seventh-largest municipality in the state in 2010 after having been ranked 22nd in 2000. The sharp increase in population from 2000 to 2010 was led by increases in the township’s Orthodox Jewish and Latino communities. Lakewood was incorporated as a township by an Act of the New Jersey Legislature on March 23, 1892, from portions of Brick Township. Portions of Howell Township in Monmouth County were annexed to Lakewood Township in 1929. Lakewood is one of the hubs of Orthodox Judaism and is home to one of the largest yeshivas in the world. The large Orthodox population, comprising more than half of the township’s population, wields considerable political clout in Lakewood Township, commanding a bloc of about 10,000 votes. Lakewood CDP (2000 Census population of 36,065), Leisure Village (4,443) and Leisure Village East (4,497) are census-designated places and unincorporated areas located within Lakewood Township. |
