The Safe Harbor boarding school story is portrayed in the 2009 movie “Safe Harbor” on the Hallmark Channel, which still airs periodically today. Safe Harbor has been featured nationally in People Magazine, and on CBS This Morning, NBC News Today, CNN, and CBN.

Safe Harbor turns wayward teenage boys into mature and responsible young men. Boys who enroll at Safe Harbor may be caught up in depression, rebellion, behavioral and school problems, minor drug use or trouble with the law, or the upheaval of a loss in their life. Often, teens in these situations need help gaining a wider view of the world, one not so fixated on themselves or keeping up with their peers.

Although you may be seeking a boarding school in Sarasota, Florida, please consider that the Safe Harbor waterfront experience combined with the one-on-one attention, counsel and training lead to an unparalleled setting for growth and change in behavior.

For at-risk boys, Safe Harbor boarding school teaches maritime skills and seamanship, gives practical life training, and builds character in the context of vocational education, all while boys work toward their high school diplomas. The boys (many have come from Sarasota, Florida) live on board boats at this waterfront boarding school. They gain knowledge of boating on the ocean and rivers while building respect for self and others, self-reliance, perseverance, and much more. Each boy who graduates from Safe Harbor discovers how to captain his own vessel, both literally and figuratively.

Besides all aspects of boating and seamanship, we give vocational training in a variety of topics, including woodworking, scuba diving, navigation, log keeping and map reading, welding, engine repair, and basic electrical work.

Normal high school classes run year-round and can be accelerated, letting students catch up wherever they may be lagging academically. Boys who complete the Safe Harbor program receive a Florida high school diploma, and a lot of them continue their education at colleges of their choice.

We also think boys should be able to handle basic life skills. More about boarding schools in Sarasota, Florida:
Sarasota is a city located in Sarasota County on the southwestern coast of the U.S. state of Florida. It is south of the Tampa Bay Area and north of Fort Myers. Its current official limits include Sarasota Bay and several barrier islands between the bay and the Gulf of Mexico.
These islands separating Sarasota Bay from the gulf near the city, known as keys, include Lido Key and Siesta Key, which are famous worldwide for the quality of their sandy beaches.
Today the keys that are included in the boundary of Sarasota are Lido Key, St. Armands Key, Otter Key, Coon Key, Bird Key, and portions of Siesta Key. Previously, Siesta Key was named Sarasota Key. At one time, it and all of Longboat Key were considered part of Sarasota and confusing contemporaneous references may be found discussing them.
Longboat Key is the largest key separating the bay from the gulf, but it is now evenly divided by the new county line of 1921. The portion of the key that parallels the Sarasota city boundary that extends to that new county line along the bay front of the mainland was removed from the city boundaries at the request of John Ringling in the mid-1920s, who sought to avoid city taxation of his planned developments at the southern tip of the key. Although they never were completed in the quickly faltering economy, those development concessions granted by the city never were reversed and the county has retained regulation of those lands ever since.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Sarasota had a population of 52,488 in 2007. In 1986 it became designated as a certified local government. Sarasota is a principal city of the Bradenton-Sarasota-Venice, Florida Metropolitan Statistical Area, and is the seat of Sarasota County.
It is among the communities included in a two-county federally mandated Metropolitan Planning Organization that includes all of Sarasota and Manatee counties and the chairs of the three elements of that organization belong to the eight-county regional planning organization for western central Florida.
